Feng Shui Basics for the Kitchen
If you’re looking to use Feng Shui in your home to improve the flow of energy and balance, a good place to start it the kitchen - it is, after all, a third of the Feng Shui “triangle” in your home (along with the entryway and the bedroom) and more importantly, it is where you prepare foods that nourish your body. The kitchen is also a symbol of abundance and wealth, so it’s important that its appearance and feel supports that philosphy.
As with any other part of your home, a sound foundation for Fung Shui in your kitchen is keeping it free from clutter. This also means keeping your counters free of any unused or rarely used appliances, as well as knick knacks or things that really don’t fit into the kitchen environment.
Throw away or donate items you don’t use, and replace the knick knacks with fresh flowers or a live plant, which not only looks pretty, but also livens the mood and helps clean the air in your kitchen. Also consider fresh fruit baskets, which symbolize health and abundance - something we all want in our kitchens, and in our lives.
If you have tile in your kitchen, try to keep it clean and shiny to promote the flow of energy, and avoid covering it with large rugs.
The placement of the stove is important to the Feng Shui of a kitchen - it shouldn’t be against a wall or in a corner where the cook will have their backs to the entrance of the kitchen. If you’re a renter or don’t have the luxury of redesigning your kitchen (as most of us don’t) simply hang a mirror above the stove, or on the wall around the stove, to allow the cook a full view of what’s going on around them.
Mirrors have the added bonus of making any room look larger, so if you use mirrors behind your stove and on the wall across from your stove, you can not only make a small kitchen look grand, you’ll also be promoting a freer flow of ch’i throughout your kitchen.
