Mirrors in Feng Shui
Mirrors possess a special form of energy which can either be very good or very bad. Keep all the mirrors clean and bright. Throw away the cracked mirrors. When used as a looking glass, the mirror should be placed at the head height.
- Mirror in the bedroom should never reflect the bed. Mirrors reflecting the bed can cause havoc in a couple’s marriage and love life.
- Mirrors in the dining room enhance your fortunes. Mirrors in the kitchen bring grave danger into your life.
- Mirrors can go on all walls, except the one which reflects the door.
Mirrors have been called the aspirin of feng shui; with proper placement, they can dramatically shift the flow of energy in any given space. They also bring a sense of refreshment and calm.
Generally, there are three categories of mirrors in feng shui:
- Typical mirrors defined by shape and frame materials (oval, round, square, etc.) For example, a round shape mirror in a gold leaf frame can be a beautiful Abundance cure and work well in the Southeast area of your space.
- Concave mirrors These mirrors are mostly used outside and produce an upside-down, condensed reflection.
- Convex mirrors have protective qualities, serving as a watchful eye Mostly used outside, although can be used inside, too, especially if nicely framed.
The Ba-Gua Mirror is a special type of feng shui cure that is covered separately.
Best feng shui areas to have a mirror:
- East (Health & Family)
- Southeast (Wealth & Abundance)
- North (Career & Path in Life)
Feng Shui areas to avoid placing a mirror:
- South (Fame & Reputation)
- on the wall directly facing the Main Door
- on the wall(s) facing the Bed
Feng Shui mirrors have multiple beneficial effects beyond allowing you to see your own appearance. When placed by a practitioner, they can help alleviate any number of difficulties. The greatest benefit of mirrors is their ability to reflect away negative chi away from a positive space. Any object, item or design flaw which creates discord in a home can be counteracted by using a Feng Shui mirror. One hidden and unknown benefit of Feng Shui mirrors is they can dampen the effect of a poorly-designed low ceiling in the home.
If you have a room in your house that sits above a busy working area or garage, then placing a mirror on the floor facing down will ‘reflect’ the negative chi emanated by the machinery and devices below. If you ever find yourself distressed whilst walking around a general location in your home, then there is probably something in the vicinity that a Feng Shui mirror could help alleviate. Use a mirror to reflect negative chi back at the offending object if it is not removable.
This will often apply as there are often objects outside of your home in the surrounding environment that generate negative chi (such as power lines). The proper placement of a Feng Shui mirror can alleviate this problem. Locate the areas of your home where the object is visible from (such as through a window), and place a mirror facing it inside the house.
As with all things Feng Shui, be sure to keep your mirrors bright and clean. Make sure they are placed at head height and if they are be used as minor remedies, make sure they are small and discreet. It is also possible to use Ba Gua mirrors (trigram mirrors) outside the home. These are essential for deflecting Sha Chi (negative chi) away from the home.
